slumdogSlumdog Millionaire is a romantic drama that was adapted from the novel “Q and A” by Vikas Swarup and is about a poor young guy in India that becomes the biggest quiz show winner in history. The film is nominated for ten Oscars and recently won a Golden Globe for Best Drama. The director, Danny Boyle, isn’t only famous for this new wonderful movie; he has also directed great films such as Trainspotting (1996) and The Beach (2000). This is another movie that shows his talent as a film director.

Jamal is an 18 year old boy from a Mumbai slum, and he is a participant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” When he just has one question left to win 20 millions rupees the program take a pause and Jamal get arrested for suspicion that he has been cheating in the program. No one believes that a guy from the slum knows all the right answers to the questions. Desperately Jamal tries to convince the authorities of his innocence by explaining how he knew the right answer  to every question, and for each question there is  a fascinating story about his life on the streets with his brother and about the people that he has crossed paths with, and last but not least, about Latika, the girl that he loved and lost.

This film asks questions about fate, greed, but most of all – if love can survive and thrive in the face of an awful obstacle. The story of the main character, Jamal, is a tragic and unfortunate one, but the story seen through his eyes is beautiful. Despite that, the hope of finding and being with Latika overpowers the sadness. They used actors of different ages to progress the story, and the youngest actors were incredible, showing both the beauty and misery of growing up in the slum in India. I liked this movie a lot – I followed his story about his life with excitement and I wanted to know more about what would happen with Jamal and how the story was going to end. Don’t miss this movie!
