The 10-10-10 Student Filmmaking Competition is an event where five high school students and five college students (amounting to ten people) have ten days to write, shoot and edit a ten minute film. Each student is given an industry professional mentor to help with the process. The ten films are then shown at The Lobero Theatre and judged based on filmmaking and screenwriting criteria.

One of the winning films titled Macy and directed by Kevin Hueng was incredibly high quality in production and content. The short, in an E True Hollywood Story style, begins with a series of interviews around Santa Barbara where people are asked about the most interested part of the year 2009. Each person responded with the answer, “Macy”. It is then revealed that Macy is a toddler actress of supreme fame. Overnight, she has become hollywoods newest IT girl. Her career and personal life  is documented, showing her ultimate slip into the very cliche, party lifestyle that former IT girls like the Olsen twins and Lindsay Lohan have slipped into before her. The short was paced to perfection and the material was hilarious.
Another short that seemed to be very popular with the audience was the short titled Frenemies. The production quality may not have been as good as Macy but the acting and content was fantastic. The short is about a story of two former friends/roommates who now hate each other. They both need jobs and seem to keep applying to the same jobs as each other unintentionally. Their tension and frustration towards each other escalates to a final showdown at a fast food resaurant interview, followed by laughter that causes them to make up but then they are at odds again due to a toilet paper mishap. I thought the actresses, dialogue and direction were very good.
There were some shorts that really struggled to get their points across and keep their audience entertained. Others kept the audience engaged and showed incredible potential for the filmmakers involved. The environment in the Lobero was very supportive and everyone seemed very excited for one another.
