This film follows Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, is dealing with over coming his alcoholic dependency issues as well as many personal problems. Accepting a job offer as a caretaker for an abandon hotel, Torrance uses this to escape both physically and mentally from anything that would lead him back to his old ways of drinking. Setting off for his new job, Torrance brings both his wife and son and begins to start his book he plans to write in order to keep himself company during the following winter months.

As time passes, things begin to unfold and the viewer starts to realize that the hotel is possessed by some kind of evil spirit that can only be seen by Jack’s son Danny, played by Danny Lloyd. Danny begins to communicate with his friend named “Tony” who speaks through Danny in a shivering lower-pitched tone. Danny possess a special ability which allows him to see the future, past, and present which also allows him to see horrible things. This ability known as the “shining” is a gift also shared with the hotel chef, Dick Hallorann. Hallorann played by Scatman Crothers approaches Danny (knowing of Danny’s ability) and warned him to stay clear of room 237d] due to previous events. The story continues, and the plot truly bends to create a terrifying story that takes the audience on a spectacular adventure.

The director used many different interesting camera angles such as the hall way seen with Danny, his tricycle, and the 2 ghosts. Stanley Kubrick (director) really was able to create a film that was able to display Nicholson’s spectacular acting in a brilliant light. With such an incredible cast and crew this movie was honestly a classic that will remain a horror masterpiece for years to come. With such classic quotes with “red rum” and “hereesssss johny!” this is honestly a genius picture that should we screened at this festival for following years.
