The Croods

The Croods is an animated movie taking place in a prehistoric time, about the first family walking on the earth and their fight for survival. We get to follow Eep (voice of Emma Stone), a girl who isn’t like the rest of her family. While her father tries to keep the family safe by not allowing them to barely do anything except hiding in their cave, Eep is a more adventurous person that wants to go out and explore what is out there in the world.  One night, Eep sneaks out of the cave and she runs up some small mountain and encounters something she never has seen before. Fire. The fire has been lit by a character we get to know as Guy (Ryan Reynolds). This becomes the start of their journey, as the family is forced to flee due to an earthquake that destroyed their old safe cave. The family, along with Guy, sets of to find a new and safe place, but the way there isn’t easy and they have to find ways to get along and survive together, despite personal differences.

One of the perks for filmmakers to work with animation, is the possibility they get to freely create something absolutely amazing, which they have done here. Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders with their crew manages to create something extremely funny and entertaining in a very simple way. They use the absolute first humans in the world and their fear of fire as a metaphor of peoples fear of change, which is both funny and intelligent.

My biggest star in this movie goes to Ryan Reynolds, who I thought wouldn’t have what it takes as a voice-actor, but he proved me very wrong as he carries the movie on Guys shoulders with his adventurous attitude and hilarious humor. And we can’t forget his awesome sidekick Belt. Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone and the other voice-actors also make a very good performance, but I think Ryan out-shined them in this one. Just thinking of the movie makes me feel good inside and kind of laugh a bit, which I always take as that I enjoyed what I have watched. The Croods get 7.5 out of 10 from me.
