   Solid review. I have not seen that film, but i for sure want to now. It would be interesting to see how the government organizes this type of behavior and why the government codons such behavior. This film reminds me of the latter part of the 1960s where the film industry starting making gangster movies. This however, goes in a different direction using organized crime to help solve the governments problem. I never even heard of this movie before this review and now I want to go watch it. Hopefully its as good as it sounds!!

   I agree with you that this film is very intense and stays with the viewer for a long time after watching it. What is unique about this film is that the director, Joshua Oppenheimer, films from the perspective of the men who committed the war crimes. He initially intended to interview people whose lives were affected by these tragic events, but he was unable to do so. The men who committed these hideous crimes are venerated in their society, which is quite unusual. In other countries and cultures, men who have committed similar (or less hideous) acts of brutality have been tried as war criminals. In Indonesia, they are celebrated. Oppenheimer capitalizes on the fact that these men, and especially the lead social actor that he follows, had an interest in American films and acting. They talked about committing the murders of their kinsmen in a style of the latest Hollywood blockbuster that was exported to Indonesia. What makes this documentary unique is that the filmmaker works with these men to recreate scenes from their past, both scenes of them killing their fellow countrymen, and fantasy sequences of them being venerated for their part in the killings. Two luminaries in the documentary field, Errol Morris and Warner Hertzog, both strongly advocated for the making of and distribution of Oppenheimer’s film, based on the unusual and creative tactics he used in telling this story.
