Carlston za Ognejka – Tears For Sale (Uros Stojanovic, 2009): Serbia
Rewived by Emelie Zahner. Viewed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival 2009.
Tears For Sale is a Romance/Drama/Comedy film that represent Serbia in the early 1930´s. Uros Stojanovic did a great work with his film and he mange to make history to something beautiful. 2/3 of all the Serbian men died during World War I and he takes this tragedy and makes it into a beautiful film.
The setting takes place in a small village in Serbia and it is during World War I. This village has just one man left because all of the others died in war, and there were three left but one killed him self because of all the pressure and one planned land mines into his wine yard to keep the women’s away but one day he stamped on one of his one mines and he blew himself up. So there was just one guy left. In this village two sisters lives and none of them had ever experienced love or sex for that matter. So they went to this guy, who was the only one left because they didn’t want to die as virgins. But something is wrong and the guy died because he was old. So they forced the two sisters to seek new men and they must return after three days with the new guys.
The actors who played the sisters Ognjenka (Sonja Kolacaric) and Mala (Katarina Radivojevic) made this film so colorful and sexy. They have the leading characters and they are so beautiful that you can’t stop looking at them. They bring they characters to life and they are playing very well.
Even if this is reality (today there is still less guys then girls in Serbia) they manage to make this film in to something funny and beautiful instead. There is a lot of satire involved and there also a lot of dark humor. It was very entertaining I must say even dough you had the problem about less guys then girls in the back of your head. I can only imagine what the girls went trough during that time.
This film was one of my personal favorites because they used so strong colors and strong characters in this film so I forgot the problem and how the real life were. I am amazed over how he could take such a big issue and make a really good movie out of it. I don’t think that a lot of people could have done same thing but he succeeded in my eyes. Even if this movie has a bit of a twist in it, it never looses its charm and that is what makes this film such a good film in my eyes.
