Be Here Now directed by Lilibet Foster an Oscar nominated film director, and the first of many films that I was going to watch at the 2016 Santa Barbara film festival. If you’re a Spartacus fan, a person who believes family is the most important thing, or have heard of cancer this film will resonate with you. The dynamic between Andy and his wife, Vashti, and how they handle the devastating news that Andy has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is inspiring. You can feel the love exude from the screen.
If you have never heard of Andy Whitfield or the show Spartacus it won’t matter, after the first fifteen minutes of the journey you will feel apart of the family. The importance of family, health, communication, living in the moment and love. Andy and his wife explain their relationship and struggles with the news. How they are feeling and what they are needing from one another. The support and love they have for one another is some-what of a real life fairy tale. By the end of the first thirty minutes Andy is faced with a decision, whether to go the normal route of chemo or travel down a different road. A decision that those who have had any health issues may face. This film sheds light on the difference of treatments and how it makes Andy feel.
The camera work is that of a better home video, but that home like camera work only adds to the film. What I found to be the most significant to this film is the sincere moments that the camera captures along with the the added music that makes you feel how the family must be feeling. You can’t help but want to help. It parallels between reality t.v. with the individual interviews, and informative television. If you want to watch an informative, heart felt, true story, appreciate life, then Be Here Now is the one to watch.
