Tangerine

Tangerine, directed and co-written by Sean Baker, is a thrill to watch. This comedy and drama is about a transsexual working girl on a hunt to find some people who wronged her. While the film had a fairly low budget, it was a big success at the box office. The film has own fourteen awards and had thirty five nominations. With their unique perspectives into the roles, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor (the two lead girls) were both first time feature film actors, delivered wonderful performances.

Tangerine is a funny, wild, action packed film set on the notorious streets of Los Angeles. The film follows Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez), a hooker who just got out of jail to find out her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Immediately she takes off on this mission to find this other woman, and her cheating boyfriend, and teach them both a lesson. Walking all over the streets of LA with the help of her best friend Alexandra (Mya Taylor), the other hookers on the streets, and pimps, Sin-Dee hunts down the other girl.

What really stands out about this film is that the whole duration of the film takes place on one day, which happens to be christmas eve. Following the girls from morning to night, closely behind their every move, the audience is able to feel like they are right there with them for the action. In addition to taking place in one day, the film really stays in one central location, which is the streets of Los Angeles, and primarily the corner of Hollywood and Highland. What sets this film apart from an other is that it was shot entirely on iPhones. This allowed the crew to get a more intimate and candid moments buy not being so intrusive with large equipment on the streets of LA.

Tangerine is a great film peppered with moments of comedy and sincerity. I would recommend that people should go and see for themselves. And if this film does sound like something you would be into, then it is available to watch on Netflix and various other platforms.
