Triangle (Ringo Lam, Hark Tsui, Johnny To, 2007): China/Hong Kong

This Cantonese subtitled action movie written by Sharon Chung and Kenny Kan created a fast paced run around storyline. The characters made the film very believable within the relationships that created love, hate, and deceit. Cinematographer, Siu-Keung Cheng delivers many superb fighting sequences without traditional martial arts that America is use to seeing in common Asian films over the years, this film was also seen at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film consisted within the ninety minute progression, in a well balanced pace and the structure of the narrative consisted of a thirty minute introduction, complication, as well as a conclusion. What was unique about this film is that there’s three directors by the names of Ringo Lam, Hark Yam, and Johnny To. It’s so hard to distinguish all three directors’ individual work, unless you really know these three directors’ styles. The editing done by David M. Richardson works between all three directors’ segments to create a one of a kind action packed film.

The traditional costumes such as the golden robe which was from the Tang dynasty, has an drastic effect on those whom are greedy in this modern day film of Hong Kong. The music fitted the elements of the storyline which was done by Dave Klotz and composed by Guy Zerafa. The development of stealing an ancient artifact wasen’t the most creative element of the story but did hold the film all together.

The ending was very shocking but had a sense of justice. The underling love triangle was unoriginal but it still had an insane woman that eventually comes to terms with herself. I was entertained with the whole story but I couldn’t imagine actually sitting down and watching the film again.
