Get The Weed (Denny Brechner 2017) Urugruay USA

This mockumentary just proves that anyone with an idea and a little creativity can truly fake it until they make it. As the events of this film unfold, Denny Brechner who wrote, co-directed and stars in this film initially has the audience questioning the legitimacy of this “documentary”.

As a viewer who initially thought this was a real low-budget documentary, I found it hard not to laugh at the ridiculously awkward situations in the first half of this film. But it wasn’t until about half way through the film that I realized this was not a documentary but in fact a mockumentary, I then felt a sense of relief  in the fact that I wasn’t laughing at these poor filmmakers attempt of a documentary, but indeed a comedic spin off of a potentially real situation.

The main character/writer (Denny Brechner) who goes by Alfredo Rodrigues, finds new friends and open doors in America as he claims to be the head of Uruguayan Chamber of Legal Marijuana, he creates a fake mission of supplying his home country (Uruguay) with 50 tons of marijuana to “satisfy the people of his country to prevent government overthrow”. With his “official” title Denny and his crew get plenty of open doors and special access to events, rallies and even embassy meetings.

My favorite twist is the fact that Denny brings his real mother (Talma Friedler) along to America for the mission as one of the main characters. This adds a whole new hilarious factor throughout the entire film as Denny and his mother have real relationship dynamics that would otherwise be impossible to script.

Without spoiling the film, I will say it stayed hilariously entertaining through to the very end. With a politically touchy subject such as the legalization of marijuana, I applaud Brechner and his crew for somehow staying out of enough trouble to finish the film much less have it approved for release by the current Uruguayan president, Who apparently has a good sense of humor too.
