One Last Night (Anthony Sabet, 2018): USA

Review by Breana Jimenez Viewed at The Santa Barbara Film Festival, 2018.

I love a good rom com, this is a bad rom com. Now romantic comedies all follow certain conventions and this movie does do that, but in the most awkward and cringe worthy way. This movie is about a couple who matched on an online dating app then got locked in the movie theater they were in. A simple premise and seemingly promising takes a very dark and creepy turn when it is revealed that Alex is the owner of the theater and purposefully locked them in (without the girls knowledge).

Letting that sink in on how (again) creepy that is the writing and acting were stiff. To be fair to the actors the writing and possible direction would make any portrayal hard to pull off. However, playing a minor character of the security guard as Escott is Brain Baumgartner and if you’re a fan of TV show The Office you know he’s hilarious. Unfortunately, in One Last Night I couldn’t muster anything other than a pity laugh.

I really wanted to like this film but there was just to much going on. The film lacked direction, the writing was stale and lead to poor acting. Then finally just the over arching creepy guy locking a girl in a room against her will just doesn’t scream romantic comedy but horror film, now that could have been interesting.
