In Bruges (Martin McDonagh, 2008): UK/Belgium

The film, In Bruges written and directed by Martin McDonagh creates a dark world between two hitman played by Colin Farrell (Ray) and Brendan Gleeson (Ken) which give an amazing performance. I couldn’t imagine anyone else to perform such dark humor in this film. Harry (Ralph Fiennes) is the boss of these two hitman whom is funny with dark humor and involved in a evil underworld of murder. This truly was one of the darkest films of the film festival with light undertones.

The development is created by two hitman laying low in Bruges, Belgium after a murder gone wrong. The form takes place within a four day span and the patterns are the consistent battle of life or death. The repetition of religion were often used as the basis of conversation as well as settings of churches and religious paintings.

The lighting was very dark using blue filters to create a dreary atmosphere. The certain relationships that developed between the characters and their situations created chaotic events. The costumes used at the end of the film referred back to the religious painting signifying, Judgement Day for all the main characters. The cinematography was cleverly done within the story of the two hitman. Eigil Bryld whom was the cinematographer captures the melancholy side of both hitman and the mental anguish that unravels through extreme close ups and extreme long shots.

The music done brilliantly by Carter Burwell also gives the missing ingredient to the scenes. The editing done throughout the film such as the suicide shot creates a significant sequence that intertwines all the characters together. The way all the characters had interacted before the end,one begins to wonder where this action/comedy film is going and has one of the best endings that I’ve seen in a long time.
