X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Gavin Hood, 2009): Australia | USA | Canada

The story of our favorite mutants (well at least mine),  X-Men Origins: Wolverine follows James Logan AKA Wolverine from childhood until about 10 years before the original X-Men movie.

Along the way he falls in love and runs into many interesting characters, such as his old rival from the original X-Men movie Sabertooth; a wise cracking mercenary Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool;  Remy Le Beau AKA Gambit and many more.

This is an overall good effort, and Donald McAlpine’s photography is at times gorgeous. Scenes such as Wolverine exiting his cabin in the Colorado Rockies take your breath away. Some of the dialogue is at times stale and, to be honest, quite lame, but there are more than a few gems to be found. Thankfully, many of Wolverine’s lines still contain that great dry humor of the original films. There are also a few scenes that seem a bit contrived, like Wolverine and Stryker’s argument in the hospital, and the final battle seemed at least to me to be completely ripped from Star Wars The Phantom Menace. Still, I will admit even though it seemed oddly familiar to me, the ending is one of the best I have seen years.

Liev Schreiber is wonderful as Sabertooth (Wolverine’s main enemy throughout the film) and the many scenes which he contributes to are the best of the bunch. The special effects are top notch and most of the action sequences are second-to-none.

This being my first review, I would like to start my rating system for the films I choose. The first rating will be whether I would watch it again, and the other the usual star rating.

Would I watch it again? I’ll be the first at Blockbuster; 3 stars!
