Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez, 2019) USA

The big production of 2019 so far, which has a budget of around 180 millions dollars is the most expensive  film director Robert Rodriguez has ever made. Here he tells us a story about Alita, that is based on the Japanese manga “Gunnm”. Alita, a cyborg that used to be a warrior but she can not remember. Saved by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), he rebuilds her, giving her the chance to live a new life, and go on a quest to find who she really is.

Rodriguez manages to give us a 2 hours of a good amount of entertainment in a futuristic world, with gorgeous visual effects. Alita looks great and is a well written character, every scene with her either fighting or interacting with the world is great. They did a really good job on crafting her, so I can say about the action in the movie. There are a good amount of action in the movie, it all looks under the director control and I never lost control of what I was watching. By the beginning of the movie we already know that Alita used to be a warrior, through the movie she has some flashbacks of her past fights, She is though when she needs to be, but she also has a great heart. Alita gets our attention not only because the way she fights, but also because she is kind.

Alita is not the only good character in the movie, with a good supporting cast. The movie has Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connely and Keean Johnson. All they have something to do in it and add to the story. With out giving out too much, the character that I most enjoyed was Christoph Waltz, he has a kind way to threat her  and even though she knows who Alita is, he still cares for her. But the movie lacks of exploration of the world, and I wished I could have seen more of it.

“Alita: Battle Angel” has great characters, very well directed action scenes and a very well made CGI! However the movie has nothing new to say, and it always feels like we have seen that story before. Even though I had a good time watching and I would be totally interested on a sequel to know about the world and where the characters go from now on.
