The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008): USA

The Dark Knight was considered the movie of the year by many viewers and critics alike. I have not met one person who was dissatisfied with the film. When the new Batman series first came out, I felt let down by “Batman Begins.” The movie was of course darker than the originals, but I felt that the casting just was not right, having Katie Holmes and Liam Nieson co-starring in the movie. The new Batman film “The Dark Knight” was truly darker and grittier than all the other films combined. I actually thought Christian Bale’s performance was better in the first movie. I feel that he is trying to disguise his voice from being recognized so much that his deep bellowing voice is almost humorous. Heath Ledger of course made this movie as successful as it was with his amazing last performance as the Joker. I never thought that anyone could out-play Jack Nicholson in that role, or any role in fact. I was thrilled throughout the entire film, and although it was an elongated two and half hours, I was on the edge of my seat basically the entire movie.

The movie’s plot is basically that Batman has now been established as an ally for the cops. They are no longer hunting him as much as having him help them catch the criminals and Mafia gangs that are at large. Gary Oldman is Batman’s closest friend on the police force, and they usually have their own private meetings. When it looks that Batman has control, an ultraviolent, crazy criminal called “The Joker” sends the city plummeting into chaos after a few incidents he set off, including a few assassinations and robberies. By himself, The Joker is not that dangerous, but he brainwashes and manipulates gangsters through intimidation and fear to build a team to overtake Gotham.

The film is on the long side, but I feel that all the components and scenes in the movie are necessary. I didn’t really spot many satellites, therefore I do not feel the movie needed to be any shorter, mainly because it was awesome. Out of everything in the movie I felt that Heath Ledger’s bone chilling performance is what really kept me glued to the screen
