The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson): USA, UK, New Zealand

While the special effects, and occasionally the cinematography, of the “The Lovely Bones” were lovely, the plot line and the acting was bone dry. I went in expecting there to be more emphasis on the father solving his daughters murder, instead what I got was a huge non-stop emotional fit that never seemed to end and sometimes did not even seem like an emotional outburst, but more along the lines of a tantrum. The only thing that kept me from leaving this one-hundred-thirty-five minute movie was the extremely beautiful scenes that Peter Jackson just loves to show off.
Based on the best selling novel by Alice Sebold, “The Lovely Bones” centers around a young girl who was murdered by her neighbor. During the course of the film the young girl watches over her family from heaven as they all change in response to her murder. The film changes perspective from the murdered girl in heaven, to her family, to her deranged killer, and repeats this cycle a few times. The entire film is about how the murdered girl’s family will either cope with her murder or try and avenge her, there are quite a few emotional outbursts/tantrums leading up to the incredibly unsatisfying end.
However where the films plot line and acting fail, it makes up for it in incredibly beautiful scenery enhanced by special effects. For instance the scene in heaven where there is a tree on which all the leaves fly off into the sky in a golden stream, there were numerous scenes in this film that are just as wonderful as this. Another great aspect of this film is the way that the camera angles and lighting made the non-heaven scenes look. For instance all scenes involving the killer were very dark and creepy, these scenes did an amazing job at capturing all of his creepiness. Words cannot properly do this films amazing visuals justice, to see a trailer of the film that shows off some visuals click here.
So if you are hoping that this film’s plot line will be as impressive and make the same impression as it’s novel counterpart, then you will be sorely disappointed. However if incredible visuals are more of your thing, then this is definitely a film worth checking out. So the bottom line is that the plot line and acting need improvement, but the incredible cinematography made this film definitely worth sitting through the tantrums and emotional outbursts.
