Clash of the Titans (Louis Leterrier, 2010): UK/USA

Is it possible to re-make a film, whose characters were originally brought to life on the big screen, by the iconic stop-motion artist Ray Harryhausen, and meet certain criteria?  The main criteria being that the CGI must not overpower the film or look intensely phony, thus diminishing the wonderful characters in the original.

Stop the press!  It has been accomplished, and kudos to Louis Leterrier for achieving this extraordinary feat in his 2010 remake Clash of the Titans.

Half-god, half-man Perseus (Sam Worthington) has a destiny to fulfill.  He has been chosen to kill the monstrous Kraken, defeat the hideously evil Hades (Ralph Fiennes), and thus redeem the beautiful Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) from her fate.   In order to succeed, Perseus must first battle the horribly disfigured Calibos, fight off giant scorpions, encounter Stygian Witches, and finally, cut off the head of Medusa without looking her in the eye.  Before this occurs, he is aided with the wings of Pegasus and also a specially forged sword, gifted to him by Zeus (Liam Neeson).

With a customary roll of the eyes upward, I approached this remake with much trepidation.  In this case,  not only was I plesantly surprised, my enthusiasm was boundless – I returned home and promptly Netflixed the original.

The film contains well-written dialogue with the help of Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark), which doesn’t leave you feeling like a blockbuster sap.

How was it in 3-D you ask?  Don’t know and don’t care.  I went to the 2-D screening and enjoyed it.  I became engrossed in the action as well as the plot, and I didn’t miss the glasses, the headaches, or paying the higher price!

Leterrier pays homage to Harryhausen in his remake, but I’m not saying anymore, I challenge viewers to watch both.  There are two sequels in the works.
