Definitely, Maybe (Adam Brooks, 2008) : UK

“Definitely, Maybe” which will come out in theaters on Valentines Day is a perfect date movie. Director Adam Brooks tells a fairytale like story based on finding true love and the complications that come with the search.

The movie begins with Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) sitting in his office looking at his unsigned divorce papers. As he contemplates signing the legal documents, he realizes it is his day to pick his daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) up from school. He quickly makes his way down the New York streets and when he opens the door to his daughter’s school, there is instant chaos. Confused as to what is going on, he asks what is going on and another parent holding her crying child close to her says “They had a sex education class today!” The camera zooms into Maya standing calmly in the middle of the crowd and her dad runs to hug her.

During their walk home, Maya has a ton of questions involving the subject of sex and relationships. When they get home, just bluntly asks her dad to tell her his entire dating story and to be truthful about it. At first Will hesitates, then figures he might as well tell her, so the story begins. As to not give away too many details, he changes all the names of the people in the story and leaves it up to her to guess who her mom is. Throughout the rest of the film, it turns into a game and she starts loving trying to figure it out.

The only thing I could say that is negative about “Definitely, Maybe” is that because the movie is a romantic comedy, it is somewhat unbelievable. Although Will had some complications and heartbreaks along the way, there are some moments that are a little ‘too good to be true’ leaving the audience happy, yet thinking reminding them that it was only a movie. It is one of those movies that fit in a perfect little package. Again, although I enjoyed a lot of the movies they played at this festival, I do have to admit that I liked this movie even for the fact that it was lightweight and purely entertaining. It’s like reading a book. Sometimes you read to learn and sometimes you to it for pleasure.

I probably would go see this movie again in the theaters with some girlfriends. It is definitely a chick flick, but it is humorous and interesting in storyline. For some reason I think that the theaters will be filled with girls when it releases, but hey, I could be wrong!
